Applying for Roles – Communication with your Recruiter

The market is crazy right now!

With the new working year back in full swing, there is lots of movement happening in the world of recruitment and in the employment market.

As mentioned in my last #lotuscandidatesupport post, Shaney, Amber, Sarah and I are here to offer free tips and advice for candidates at all stages of the recruitment process, particularly during these busy times!

So let’s talk about: Applications!

If you are at the beginning of your job search and engaging a recruiter to help you secure work, then read on to hear how your communication can potentially best score you your dream role and allow you to get the most value from using a recruiter!

  1. Your first phone call with a recruiter – it’s like a first date. You want to build that rapport quickly, showcase your skills, and leave them thinking that you are the best candidate for the role. Articulation and honesty here is key! Whilst experience is absolutely relevant and will play a big part in being considered and securing the role you are going for, personality, professionalism, and communication is what make you stand out from the others! Allow your personality to shine!
  2. Stay in contact! Recruiters work at a very fast pace, and especially with a market like today, it is so important that you let your recruiter know when you are next available to speak if you know you won’t be able to take any calls/messages for a while. This way they will know you are still interested in the role and keep you front of mind for the position they are considering you for, to avoid missing out!
  3. Be honest! Recruiters value honesty more than you may know! If that role isn’t for you… It’s OK! If you have been offered another role.. CONGRATULATIONS! If you are unsure that you can commit to the timelines… we might have other roles that will work for you! By continuing to have an open and honest relationship with your recruiter, this allows you to get the best from them, and will give you a greater opportunity to land that perfect role.

As of 2024, a powerful generational shift is redefining the Australian workforce. For the first time, the workplace is no longer dominated by Baby Boomers or Gen X, but by Millennials and Gen Z. According to the Great Place to Work Insights Report 2024 , these two generations now account for 67% of the workforce in Australia — a demographic transformation that is reshaping major culture across workplaces. With this shift means evolving expectations: how people want to work, what they value in employers, and what they need from leaders. As Baby Boomers retire and Gen X move into more senior leadership roles, Millennials and Gen Z are stepping up — and demanding workplaces that are human-first, values-led and future-focused.

In a market where competition for qualified professionals is fierce, many of our non-profit clients are asking us: “How can we attract and retain great people when we can’t compete on salary and perks?” It’s a valid concern. Industries such as technology, financial services and consulting often have the financial bandwidth to offer high salaries, generous bonus structures and a long list of lifestyle benefits. For mission-driven organisations working with tighter resources, it can feel like a difficult race to run. But a compelling Employee Value Proposition (EVP) isn’t built on budget alone. An EVP is fundamentally about meaning. The reasons people feel proud to work at your organisation. The most effective EVPs we see are not necessarily flashy, but they are clear, consistent and deeply connected to the values and culture of the organisation. When well-crafted and confidently communicated, non-profits can not only compete, but excel, when it comes to attracting and retaining capable, aligned professionals who are motivated by more than just salary.
